Visual Merchandising

At Skirt, the owner likes to re-merchandise the entire store every 3 weeks. She gets this time frame from her customers. Her highest spending and most loyal customers come in about every 3 weeks so that is what she bases her merchandising schedule off of. Also, we receive new merchandise almost daily and add it onto the floor, after a week or so, it can start to get messy and unorganized with the new merch just thrown in there. We merchandise by color coordinate with wall bays on the entire perimeter of the store going from color story to color story. There are also two tables in the center that hold jewelry, accessories and some casual tees and bottoms. When we begin to reorganize and re-merchandise, we typically start early in the morning before the store opens and take every single garment off the wall bays and onto rolling racks. From here, we integrate the new merchandise into new color stories and start organizing how each color story will flow into the next. It takes a very long time and I have realized it is a lot harder than it looks! Customer's really enjoy our visual merchandising and it allows them to shop and put together outfits much easier. Although, because we are a boutique and usually only carry one size run of each style, color coordinate merchandising can make it difficult to find an item when it needs to be put back or when there is only one left it is like finding a needle in a haystack. In all, I think it is important that we put so much focus on visual merchandising because often it can be forgotten but I feel it is an essential part of a boutique's success. I'm starting to really like visual merchandising and I'm glad I can learn more and practice here as a part of my job.
Here is an image of a blue color story we merchandised at the store.

  1. Hey Ashley,
I recently posted about Visual Merchandising as well! We change our store at Dusica Dusica often as well. It is fun to be able to change the color stories and displays to make it new for the reoccuring customers!

  2. Hi Ashley,
At UNIQLO we do something similar with color order, although we are far from a small boutique (as UNIQLO is now nationwide as well as worldwide) we still are keen about detailing every last bit of the store and a big emphasis on color order from our wall bays to t stands to waterfalls to center fixture... there is an order and a standard for everything. One thing I love about boutiques though is that they are able to personalize to their locals unlike big chains like us. I love that the schedule revolves around the loyal customers, it really puts into practice serving the needs of the customers.
