Everything You Wanted to Know About How Magazines Operate

Ever wonder exactly how a magazine gets pulled together? It takes a lot of people to make just one issue of your favorite publication. After interning for quite a few months at publications I finally have the flow of the editorial side of magazines down pat.
I should start by explaining what the differences between the two sides of each magazine are. Each magazine is split into two separate divisions and further divided from there). The large segments are Publishing and Editorial. Publishing takes care of writing, advertising, marketing and more. Editorial takes care of all the fashion you see in a magazine (clothing, accessories, even beauty).
I have been interning on the Editorial sides of magazines. Still not positive of everything that goes on as far as publishing!
The highest person as far as editorial is concerned is the Creative Director of the magazine. He/ She is the person in charge of the creative direction of the magazine, the person who ultimately choses what will be in and out of the magazine each month and traditionally the person who styles a large amount of the photo-shoots for the magazine.
The next people in line are the Fashion Director, Fashion Market Director as well as the Accessories director. They also are in charge of the creative direction of the magazine and get to style photo-shoots pertaining to their department. They also over see theirdepartments in whole. The Directors make mood boards for the stories that you see in magazines and then call in the pieces that are chosen to be featured in the magazine for each story. There are the Editors, who do a very similar job to the directors. They each have markets (for example someone has the American market, Someone has Paris and Milan, another person has London). The Editors pull together boards for the Creative director to look at and call in garments, or accessories for these stories as well. They call in a larger volume of product than the directors do.

Next tier of the magazine is Assistants. There are many different kinds of assistants at a magazine, andeach kind holds different responsibly. Closet assistants are one type of assistant. They take care of the samples that come in and out of the closets for photo shoots. They are also generally in charge of the interns in the closet and making sure they stay on task. There are assistants to editors who help the editors with daily tasks, as well as calling in looks or accessories for the photo shoots. Also the Creative Director generally has an assistant who helps them on all of their photo shoots.
Finally we have the interns, who do check ins and outs of the closet (sample trafficking). And keep things organized within the closet!

  1. Just at a quick glance of your blog post, some of your fonts are not the same and there are some things highlighted, I understand that this might only be a draft though. Just thought I would make sure you knew. I really like the idea of teaching your reader about how a magazine operates and it was interesting to hear an insider’s point of view. I have always wanted to work on photo-shoots for a magazine and after reading your post I am realizing that I may want to be a Creative Director in the future! Thanks for helping me see a possible career path.
